ILD Messages

The ILD celebrations proper, held on 7 September 2018, was attended by students and teachers from different schools apart from those of DPS. Speaking on the ILD 2018 theme of ‘Literacy and Skills Development,’ the Chief Guest, Dr P Ramanujam, who is Director, ELT Centre, and Senior Professor of English, at Gudlavalleru Engineering College, raised the students’ consciousness about the deeper implications of literacy and the need for developing higher-order skills so that they could look at things deeply and critically. Drawing examples from Indian newspapers, Indian economy, and our dependence on digital networks controlled from abroad, he spoke about information literacy, financial literacy and digital literacy, and quizzed the students on the issues involved in all these.

The Guest of Honour, Shri G V Ramana Rao, who is a Senior Assistant Editor in The Hindu, Vijayawada Edition, spoke on media literacy. Disabusing the popular notion of media objectivity, he enlightened the students about the higher-order literacy skills they need to have in order to assess the news and views the media offers.

Speaking on the second day of the celebrations, the Principal of DPS, Ms G Mala, said: ‘This celebration is a celebration of our progress in our fight and quest to eradicate illiteracy in workplaces and communities.’ Mrs Shanthi Ramanujam, Head, Department of English, DPS, also spoke on the second day.
